Double cleansing: what it is and how to do it properly

Olio Detergente Ginseng

Double cleansing means washing your face twice in a row with two different products: an oil-based cleanser on a dry face first, then a water-based one. It works because dirt, make-up and sunscreen are not all alike: some dissolve in oil, others in water. One product alone always leaves part of it behind.

Why two steps and not one

By the end of the day your skin carries two kinds of residue. On one side sebum, make-up and sunscreen, which are oil-soluble. On the other sweat, dust and water-soluble residue, which rinse off with water.

A foaming cleanser strong enough to remove the first group ends up taking more from your skin than it should. Double cleansing solves the problem by splitting it: the oil handles the greasy part, the foam takes care of what is left. Neither has to do the other's job, so neither has to be harsh.

How to do it, step by step

1. Oil cleanser, on a dry face

This is the part almost everyone gets wrong: the first cleanser goes on dry skin, with dry hands. If your face is wet, the oil emulsifies straight away and never gets the chance to dissolve anything.

Massage for about thirty seconds, working on the spots where make-up holds on. Then add a little lukewarm water with your hands and keep massaging: the product turns milky. That is when you rinse.

There are three oil cleansers in stock: Ginseng Cleansing Oil by Beauty of Joseon, made with soybean and ginseng seed oil; Biome Resetting Moringa Cleansing Oil by Axis-Y; and Double Shot Oil to Foam by Hamel, a hybrid: it starts as an oil and turns into foam under water, so it covers both steps with one product. The rest are in oil cleansers.

2. Water-based cleanser, on a wet face

This is the step you already know: foam or gel, wet face, short massage, rinse with lukewarm — never hot — water.

What to pick depends on your skin. The Esfolio foams start at €7.90; Sunday Morning Refreshing by Axis-Y and VT Cica Mild Foam are two more substantial options. If you prefer a gel, look at the Some By Mi cleansing gels. The full list is in water-based cleansers.

3. Pat dry, don't rub

Press the towel against your skin, don't drag it. And do the next step — usually toner — within a minute, while your skin is still slightly damp.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Wetting your face before the oil. The most common one, and it cancels out the first step entirely.
  • Using hot water. Lukewarm: hot water leaves skin tight.
  • Double cleansing in the morning too. There is no need — there is no make-up or SPF to dissolve when you wake up. A water-based cleanser is enough, or just water if your skin is dry.
  • Massaging for too long. Thirty seconds per step does it.

Does everyone need it?

In the evening, yes, for anyone who wears make-up or sunscreen — which, if you follow a Korean routine, means every day. If you wear neither and your skin is very dry, one gentle cleanser at night is a reasonable choice.

If you are building your routine from scratch, the guide to the K-beauty steps puts cleansing in the context of everything else.
