Snail mucin — snail secretion filtrate on a label — is the filtered secretion produced by the snail, used in Korean cosmetics for its distinctive texture: thick, slightly tacky on application, and fast to absorb. It is one of the ingredients that made K-beauty recognisable outside Korea.
How to spot it on a label
The INCI name is Snail Secretion Filtrate. Where it sits in the ingredient list tells you how much of it there is: the higher up, the higher the concentration. Some Korean products put it first, ahead of water.

Where it fits in a routine
It depends on the format, which is why you find this ingredient in very different products:
- Cleanser — first or second step, like any other cleanser.
- Toner — right after cleansing.
- Soaked pads — instead of a toner, swept across the face.
- Serum — after toner, before cream. The most common format.
